Monitoring Temperatures with Cacti - Final Thoughts

As you can see, we’ve reached the end of this article. By now you should have set up Cacti to monitor everything a system administrator may need, including temperatures and voltages. As I mentioned earlier, there are other “stand-alone” solutions that monitor this and that, but it’s actually quite important to have everything in the same place -- and Cacti offers this, under a manageable web interface.

You can then take advantage of other Cacti plug-ins and extensions, such as Thold and others. Thold lets you set up and configure a powerful notification system. Thold, by definition, is an alerting module. Ultimately, the possibilities are limitless; starting from implementing a system which sends text messages about the problems (if needed, but hopefully that won’t happen frequently) up to fancy-looking report generation and statistics.

As a final note, if you have decided to stick with Cacti and still yearn to get into deeper waters, then by all means don’t hesitate to join the official forums. The community is awesome, and there are lots of “yet to be tested” sorts of pre-alpha plug-ins, extensions, modules, and all that. You may find something really interesting.

In closing, I’d like to invite you to join our community of technology professionals experienced in all areas of IT&C starting from software and hardware up to consumer electronics at Dev Hardware Forums. Also, be sure to check out the community of our sister site at Dev Shed Forums. We are friendly and we’ll do our best to help you.
