Clickfree PC Backup Systems Compared - Carbonite

Carbonite is a fully featured no-click online backup service that will store an unlimited amount of data for an annual fee of $49.95. This revolutionary system fulfills the promise of previous online backup services, which were either too expensive or too limited in capacity to be of genuine use as security solutions. Like Back2zip and Clickfree, Carbonite is almost invisible in operation, consisting of just a small application that is downloaded to the PC and runs in the background, identifying and backing up altered files to a permanently available online server as required. There is no interface and no storage device is needed – the only thing necessary is a broadband Internet connection.

Carbonite includes the following key features:

    • Double data encryption
The system double-encrypts all data before it is transferred over the Net, to secure against interception and compromise, and the stored data is also encrypted, making it available only to the account owner.

    • Automatic sleep mode
Carbonite automatically becomes idle whenever the system is in use, in order to conserve system resources for regular user tasks. Then when the machine becomes idle, it wakes up and starts backing up any new or modified data.

    • Online restore function
In the event of data loss, data can be restored quickly and easily from the Carbonite website.

    • Configurable backup sources
By default, Carbonite backs up the Windows Documents and Settings folder. However, it is possible to manually specify additional folders and files to include in the backup.

    • Simple visual backup status indicators
Carbonite uses a clever system of dots on your files and folders, making it possible to see their status at a glance. A green dot means the file or folder is fully backed up. A yellow dot indicates that backup is pending for the file or folder. A file or folder with no dot is not selected for backup. A folder that shows a green dot with a white dot within it contains some files that are not selected for backup. In this case, those files that are so selected are fully backed up.
