PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor: What is it? - Application
(Page 4 of 4 )
The original intent of PHP was to bring dynamic content to websites. PHP made it easier for webmasters to change their web pages without having to directly edit files and re-upload them. Developers can simply create online forms that anyone can use to upload articles, news, or whatever they want. This application of PHP makes content updates easier for everyone, and possible for someone without the expertise to edit web page files directly.
Since its development, the applications of PHP have become far more diverse than simple dynamic content. One of the most prevalent examples of this expansion is user-generated content. It seems that everyone on the Internet has become addicted to being able to put their own content on other people’s websites. Sites such as YouTube and Facebook have realized this trend and have profited enormously from it.
It seems that any modern website must offer these basic applications of PHP in order to be popular. A static web page is indicative of a small company with a small budget that really holds no interest for anyone. To be competitive, a website must not only offer dynamic content, but must also allow its users to offer their own content. Of course, there are plenty of issues that come along with these demands, but the trends have shown that it is more than worth putting in the extra effort to satisfy the public.
Beyond its common applications, PHP can also be used to perform complex functions with specific purposes. For instance, several applications have been developed that combine pictures of letters with a large image to produce a “security word” for online forms. These forms effectively eliminate spam from robots online.
Other complex applications can process credit cards automatically online, manage the content and look of entire websites, or track the inventory and shipping logistics of a Fortune 500 company across the entire world. Basically, PHP has been used to develop innumerable applications with an unlimited number of different purposes.
No matter what the need is, PHP can achieve it and put it on the Internet. Through its power and effectiveness, PHP has taken the Internet into the modern age and given it a life of its own. Without PHP, it is impossible to imagine the Internet being the myriad, diverse, and powerful medium for operation that it is today.
