Set Up Your Home Office on Linux: a Guide for Windows Users - Do a Sort and Store
(Page 3 of 4 )
This is simple, but can be time consuming. You need to go through all of your files and decide which ones you want to keep. Bear in mind that once you wipe the operating system, anything you have not saved will be gone forever. Recovery simply will not be an option. Save your important files to an external storage medium in order to protect them. Some of your options include:
1. Burning files to a CD.
2. Putting them on a flash drive (or an external hard drive). If you have a lot of files, this may be your best choice.
3. Using an online file storage or sharing service.
Now that your files are safe and sound, we can move on to to picking your flavor of Linux.
Choosing Your Flavor of Linux
Linux comes in many different types, often called flavors, each of which appeals to a set group of users. If you have a specific need, then you will want to find a flavor that is tailored to those needs. If what you need is a good generalist, this author recommends that you consider Ubuntu. It is stable, user friendly and has a software install center that can save you time.
Once you have made your decision, you can go ahead and download your operating system of choice and burn an .iso disk. This can not be done with your basic file burner. It is more specialized than dragging the files in and pressing burn. You can use some of these instructions below to burn an .iso file.
