One of the features that Microsoft Office 2007 provides is the ribbon . For many users who used previous versions of Microsoft Office, this feature can present a learning curve. For example, users relied on menus in order to get to their functions. Although the ribbon gives the interface a sophisticated look and feel, users still have to click on the options that make up the tool bar and find that particular function for which they're looking. On the other hand, OpenOffice 3.0 still offers menus for users to select, which will make you feel at home if you've been using prior versions of Microsoft Office.
Microsoft Office 2007's Word has improved its Spelling function and has been offering the grammar correction feature for a while. OpenOffice 3's Writer can catch spelling errors; however, it does not offer a grammar check feature.
As previously stated, OpenOffice has the Start Center function that enables you to look at all the applications that can be started, in addition to the Extension manager. Microsoft Office, on the other hand, does not offer this feature.
However, OpenOffice's Calc does not compare to Microsoft Excel. If you're working with complex and large spreadsheets, Microsoft Excel's performance is better than OpenOffice's Calc. According to Channel Web, the Test Center's reviewers conducted a test between the two applications and found that Microsoft Excel excelled in handling these complicated tasks.
Apparently, Microsoft Office still dominates when it comes to color schemes and styles. Users have criticized OpenOffice's boring colors, and have opted for Microsoft Office's jazzier colors.
Two major criticisms that users have expressed against Microsoft Office are constant version upgrades and most importantly, cost. Both suites contribute greatly to the business world. If you're tired of having to purchase upgrades or full versions of Microsoft Office every time there is a new release, just remember, you do have an alternative.
