Book Review: Learning Nagios 3.0 - Final Conclusions

You have come to the end of this book review, and the time has come for us to draw some conclusions and eventually rate this book. But I truly think that my final thoughts shouldn’t surprise anyone from what you could read about the book until now.

Summing this entire review up, I can recommend this book with a clear conscience for those people that fit into the profile of targeted readers and are part of the right audience. All in all, I am giving this book a rating of 4/5. The book delivers what it promises, in a comprehensible and straightforward style, and the content is valid. Without any doubt, the author has done his best to lead you through how to administer Nagios with ease.

Strictly from a technical point of view, the book is a distillation of the official Nagios documentation with increased practicality due to the personal experience of the author. That is why this book is “more” than reading the plain old (and boring) docs. You can feel how you can get the most out of each function thanks to the great number of examples. But the book should have received a bit more editing (there’s a typo on the back cover, for example; this might turn some people off—and away from the book).

Should you work in a corporation or company where network monitoring and problem prevention is becoming harder and harder, chances are your infrastructure really yearns for an automated solution. Nagios is the industry standard, and this book is overall an effective and practical introduction. The targeted audience is sysadmins.

Lastly, before we finish, please bear with me as I’d like to thank everyone over at PACKT Publishing for giving me the opportunity to review this book. I’ve had the good fortune to be in touch with Duane Moraes from their team, and he has shown a great deal of professionalism and business expertise.

Furthermore, please don’t miss the sample chapter of the book: “Passive Checks and NSCA.” And if you feel like being part of the right audience, then don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this book (PACKT, Amazon, B&N). I’ve attached additional relevant information about the book below:
