It took me a while to figure out how to parse a 10 digit zip into 5. The code is likely extraneous, but I'm new at this and it worked. I code takes a field from a database ( in this case a zip code database with 10 digit zips demaracated by a "-") parses the data into an arrays of 5 and 4 digits and then loads the data into a predifined field for zip 5 digits.
$update = "update zips set zip5='".addslashes($zip5)."' where $id=id";
if (@mysql_query($update)) { echo('<p>New Information added</p>'); } else { echo('<p>nope: ' . mysql_error() . '</p>'); } } ?>
